A ship pilot is responsible for safely guiding vessels through navigational challenges in ports, harbors, and waterways. They work closely with ship captains, harbor masters, and other maritime professionals to ensure the safe and efficient transit of ships.
Job Responsibilities :
- Possess in-depth knowledge of local waterways, channels, ports, and harbor areas.
- Stay informed about navigational aids, charts, and maritime regulations applicable to the assigned region.
- Provide pilotage services to incoming and outgoing vessels, boarding and disembarking from ships using pilot boats.
- Collaborate with ship captains and crew to understand the specific characteristics and handling capabilities of each vessel.
- Assess and mitigate potential navigational hazards, including shallow waters, submerged obstacles, and adverse weather conditions.
- Advise ship captains on safe navigation practices and potential risks during transit.
- Maintain effective communication with port authorities, control towers, and other vessels to coordinate safe passage.
- Work collaboratively with harbor masters, tugboat operators, and other maritime stakeholders.
- Keep accurate records of pilotage activities, including ship movements, navigational challenges, and any incidents.
- Prepare reports on pilotage services rendered and submit them to the appropriate authorities.
Job Requirement :
- Bachelor's degree in maritime studies, nautical science, or a related field is preferred.
- Valid Endorsement (Pandu class 1 / Pandu class 2) issued by the relevant maritime authority.
- Extensive experience as a ship captain or officer in a relevant maritime environment.
- In-depth knowledge of local waterways and navigational regulations.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Physical fitness and the ability to board and disembark from moving vessels using pilot boats.
- Several years of experience as a ship captain or officer, with a proven track record of safe navigation in challenging environments.
